At Ross Cottage Nursery School,
we have great respect for the Montessori tradition and its beautiful emphasis on independence, concentration, and allowing children the freedom to explore their interests. Like Montessori, we believe children thrive when they are trusted as capable individuals and given meaningful opportunities to discover the world around them.
Alongside this respect for independence, our philosophy also places strong value on shared experiences and community life. Our days include moments of individual discovery as well as circle gatherings, storytelling, music, and group activities. These times together are joyful and meaningful — helping children practice listening, cooperation, and becoming part of something larger than themselves.
While the Zoila-Shaffer Early Childhood Philosophy draws inspiration from respected traditions such as Montessori, it remains distinct in several important ways. Montessori classrooms often emphasize independent work within carefully prepared environments. Our approach similarly values independence, yet places a deeper emphasis on relationship-based learning and emotional grounding.
At Ross Cottage Nursery School, we believe connection precedes independence. Emotional security and community form the base from which confidence grows. Additionally, our philosophy integrates nature intentionally and consistently, weaving outdoor exploration into the rhythm of learning rather than treating it as a separate component.
The Zoila-Shaffer Early Childhood Philosophy balances structure, curiosity, and real-world responsibility in ways that reflect both timeless tradition and lived experience.
